Avoid a DUI This Holiday Season

The holiday season is associated with joy and love. Many Americans will be celebrating the fall and winter months surrounded by family, friends, food, holiday cheer, and even alcoholic beverages.

Unfortunately, drunk driving accidents and fatalities increase substantially during this time of year, starting off with the night before Thanksgiving and ending in the early hours of New Year’s Day. Because of this, there is an increase in police officers patrolling the streets and DUI checkpoints set up to deter people from driving under the influence.

So if you plan on celebrating the holidays drinking, the following are helpful tips to avoid getting arrested for a DUI:

  1. Drink in moderation – If you are planning on attending different events throughout the day or night, make sure you do not drink too much. Keep in mind the number of drinks you have in the event you have the drive later.
  2. Designate a sober driver – Do not wait until you are intoxicated to begin searching for a designated driver to take you back home. Rather, figure it out before attending an event.
  3. Use Uber or Lyft – Due to the advancement of modern technology, requesting a ride can be as simple as tapping your cellphone a few times. Ridesharing services have become a popular alternative to driving, especially if you are under the influence.
  4. Sleepover – Another alternative is spending the night at the party host’s place. Not only will you avoid getting a DUI, but the host will have the peace of mind knowing that you are safe.
  5. Host a party at your home – If you have friends and family over at your party, you do not have to worry about driving! However, ensure that your guests have plenty of alternative driving options if they should get intoxicated.
